A Message from Vicki

In 2016, the MHUMC Administrative Board approved MHUMC’s participation in ABIDE, a program of Spiritual Leadership, Inc. An ABIDE Team was formed to serve as a Visioning Team on behalf of the Administrative Board and the church. ABIDE team members are: Debbie Russell, facilitator; Keith Carr; Preston Everett, Alice Heard, Vicki Landrum and Laura Sharp. The ABIDE Team invested a lot of time in trying to discern God’s future direction for MHUMC. It met twice a month from August 2016 – May 2017, attended 3 Saturday retreats with other ABIDE churches, and read books to learn more. Each member brought prayers, ideas, fears, struggles and excitement to the table. After much prayer and discussion, the MAP (Ministry Action Plan) was produced as a tangible result of the ABIDE Team’s work. The Administrative Board approved the MAP as a guide for ministry at MHUMC for the next 3-5 years at its July 23, 2017 meeting. During Aug-Dec 2017, staff and laity attended training related to the implementation of MAP, Katie Owens was hired as Children’s Ministry Director, and the 2018 MHUMC Team Leaders were nominated and approved. We are now ready to use the MAP church-wide as our guide for ministry in 2018. Below you will find the 5 questions and answers that form The MAP. Why are we here? (our mission) To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. To be disciples making disciples. What’s non-negotiable for us? (our values) To be Biblical, faithful, generous, loving welcoming and to have Christ-centered worship experiences. Where are we now, really? (our context) 1. Neighborhood is in transition. 2. There are many single parent families as well as older residents. 3. Location is positive: Close to schools, park, Hwy 80, ball fields, etc. 4. Location is a challenge: Not located on a major road which decreases our visibility. 5. Have some young adults, young families, children and youth, but, also are an aging congregation. 6. We consider ourselves a church family. This is positive for those who are here, but can be a challenge for new people coming in trying to find their place here. 7. In 1 mile radius of church, 14% of people say that their faith is really important to them. Where is God leading us? (our vision) To be a safe and loving church where people may become connected to God How will we get there? (our systems and processes) Increase intentional hospitality. Propose to do this by developing ways to involve new members and developing more social media tools, (building on what we have already.) Deepen discipleship for all ages. Goal is that all members will participate in some form of Christian small group like Sunday School, Bible study, etc. Strengthen ministry with children and families. Church hired Katie Owens as Director of Children’s Ministry as part of this goal. Enhance Christ-centered worship Expand church outreach, especially within 1 mile radius of MHUMC MAP will be a useful tool (now and in the future) to plan, coordinate and evaluate ministry and to discern God’s will in the life of our church. MAP will shape the work of NOW teams and the Administrative Board this year. You will be hearing more about MAP throughout 2018. Contact a member of the ABIDE team for more information.
